with
Backup Codes
v20221006.JS
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this document is to explain how to obtain 2-Factor authentication backup codes from a Wycliffe USA Google account.
This document assumes that you are currently able to log into your Google account.
If you are locked out of Google with a message stating that you do not have a 2-factor authentication method setup, please contact the Wycliffe HelpDesk for assistance.
How To
Logging into Wycliffe Google account settings
CLICK HERE to log directly into your Google security management page.
Link: security.google.com
Click on the Security menu item on the left side of the screen
Locate the Signing into Google section.
Click on 2-Step Verification
After clicking on 2-Step Verification, you may be asked to verify your account again, do so now.
Next, click on the Backup Codes section with the airplane icon
Click on the Get Backup codes button on the Backup Codes screen
It will then generate 10 backup codes that you may save with various methods.
Do one of the following:
Click the Print Codes button to print a physical copy
Click the Download Codes button to save these codes to a file on your computer
Take a photo of this screen with your smartphone
Once you have saved these codes using one of the above methods, you may click the back arrow at the top of the screen, or simply close the window. There is nothing more you need to do at this point.
Note: These codes are one time use only. Once you use one, you will need to cross it off your list.
I am running out of codes!
When you only have a couple of codes left, you will need to generate a new set of codes.
To do this:
Follow this same document until you get to the last screen (as seen directly above) where you see your backup codes.
You will see the circular refresh arrow next to the trash can icon on the right side of the screen.
Click this circular arrow, and it will generate 10 new codes for you.
Remember to print, download or take a photo of your new codes after generating them.
These codes are too much to keep track of!
If you don’t want to keep track of a list of codes, and you have a smartphone, you can easily install a small app that will generate a new code each time you want to log in.
There are two code generating apps that we support, choose one and follow the instructions.
How To Install Google Authenticator
There will be article links at the bottom of each document on how to use that particular app after you install it.
