Security Key
v.20220902.JS
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this document is to walk you through how to set up 2-step verification for your Wycliffe USA Google account using a security key and how to obtain backup codes in case you misplace your security key.
This document assumes that this is your first time setting up 2-step verification on your Wycliffe USA Google account and that you have already been issued a security key.
This document could be used during new staff orientation or for those that previously setup 2-step verification with their smartphones and would like to add a security key.
Before getting started
If you do not yet have a key, please CLICK HERE to fill out our Google form so that the Wycliffe HelpDesk may send you one.
Getting Started
To add a security key to your Wycliffe Google account, you will need to perform the following steps.
Logging into Wycliffe Google account settings
CLICK HERE to log directly into your Google security management page.
Click on either of the Sign In buttons to sign in to your Wycliffe USA Google account.
After logging in, you may experience one of two scenarios below. Either scenario will let you continue to the Setup steps.
Scenario A
After logging in, you may encounter this screen, explaining a new policy and to enroll now.
Go ahead and click on the Enroll button at the bottom.
It will require you to re-verify your Google account by having you log in again. Do so now to continue.
You may skip past Scenario B, and continue to the next section.
If you did not see the above screen in Scenario A, then continue to Scenario B.
Scenario B
Click on the Security menu item on the left side of the screen
Locate the Signing into Google section.
Click on 2-Step Verification
Once the 2-Step Verification setup screen has come up, click on the Get Started button at the bottom right.
It will require you to re-verify your Google account by having you log in again. Do so now to continue.
Set Up 2-Step Verification
The next screen will ask you to use your phone to set up a second step for signing in.
As of July 2022, text verification options will no longer be enabled for Wycliffe USA Google account first time setups. Instead, you will be using a physical security key to authenticate with for the first time.
Click on the Show more options link
You will see an additional option for Security Key. Click on this option.
The next screen asks if you have your security key. Click Next at the bottom.
A security key setup window will appear. Click the OK button.
A continue setup window will appear. Click the OK button.
When prompted, plug your security key into a USB port at this time.
Once it recognizes your security key, you will be prompted to touch your security key. Do so now.
Once completed, you will notice a big blue shield on your screen with a check mark on it, stating underneath that your security key has been registered.
Below this statement, you will see a field to enter in a name for your security key.
Add something meaningful to you, such as “Linda’s security key” or “Shared Departmental Key” or something similar. You may be able to add multiple keys to your account, so you will need to know which one is which if you later on add more.
Once you have named your key, click on the Done link at the bottom right of the screen.
Congratulations!
You have added a security key to your Wycliffe USA Google account!
Next you will want to obtain some backup codes for your account, in case you misplace your security key.
Remain on the 2-Step Verification screen for the next steps.
Backup Codes
Once you have finished adding your security key, you will want to obtain your backup codes. This will enable you to log in should you misplace your security key.
To obtain these codes:
Click on Backup codes halfway down the page
On the Backup codes screen, click on the Get backup codes button
You will then see a list of 10 codes that each have a one-time use.
Use one or more of the following methods to save these in a safe place for yourself.
Click the Print codes button
Click the Download codes button, and save them in a text file to your computer
Take a picture of this screen with your smartphone
Once you have your backup codes in a safe place that you can retrieve them from in the future, you are encouraged to continue on to the final step. The final step is optional, but will be helpful if you misplace your security key and can’t find your backup codes.
Optional - Set up an Authenticator App
This step is optional, but important. The setup process for adding an authenticator app, and adding your Wycliffe USA Google account to it, is fairly simple and quick. It is well worth the extra effort to do this now so that you can more easily get into your account in the future should something happen to your security key and backup codes.
