Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this document is to explain how to add your Wycliffe Identity Account (or IDP for short) to Google Authenticator on your smartphone for use with 2-Step Verification.

This document will only cover how to add your Wycliffe Identity Account to Google Authenticator.

This document assumes this is your first time setting up your IDP account, or you have already set up an authentication method with a security key, or that you have contacted the Wycliffe HelpDesk for assistance.

This document assumes you have a smartphone with internet access ready to use for this process. This document also assumes you have already installed Google Authenticator on your smartphone. If you have not yet installed Google Authenticator, CLICK HERE for installation instructions.

How To

To add your IDP account’s 2-Step Verification to Google Authenticator, you will need to perform the following steps.

Before starting… Do you have your smartphone?

Before getting started, make sure you have your smartphone nearby with Google Authenticator already installed. If you have not yet installed Google Authenticator on your smartphone, CLICK HERE for installation instructions.

Logging into Wycliffe Identity profile

If you have not previously added a Smartphone 2-step verification method to your IDP account, you will see the yellow exclamation triangle, with the message stating “No smartphone at this time, please add one”.

If you have previously added a Smartphone 2-step verification method to your IDP account and it’s not working, you may click on the Lost or New, or Remove buttons in the Smartphone section before continuing.

  • Click on the Add button in the Smartphone section

  • Click on the Yes button on the screen, asking “Do you have a smartphone?”

The next screen will state that Authy is recommended. While this is an option you may use, this document is only explaining how to add your IDP account to Google Authenticator.

If you are already using Google Authenticator, you do not need to install Authy and may continue with the process.

  • Click on the “OK, I Installed It On My Smartphone” button

On the next screen you will see a QR code.

  • Scan the QR code with Google Authenticator.

On Your Smartphone

  • Now you will need to use your smartphone to open the Google Authenticator app.

If this is the first account you are adding to Google Authenticator, you will need to tap past the welcome screen, if it’s still showing, until you get to the Setup your first account screen.

  • Tap the Scan a QR code button if this is the first account you are adding

OR

  • Click the + button if you already have other accounts setup on it.

Your phone may ask you to authorize Google Authenticator to use your camera.

  • Give your phone permission to access the camera or you will not be able to continue.

Once Google Authenticator can access your camera, it will automatically show the camera screen.

  • Aim your camera phone at the QR code on your computer screen.

It should automatically add it to Google Authenticator

  • Keep the app open on your smartphone.

You will need the number on the screen to complete the next step for the IDP 2-step verification setup.

Back on your computer

Once you have scanned the QR code using Google Authenticator on your smartphone, you will continue the setup process on your computer.

  • Click on the “Ok, My App Is Generating Codes Now” button

Next you will need to type in the code that you see on the Google Authenticator app on your smartphone.

Notice the little timer next to the code on your smartphone. This code will change every 30 seconds, and this timer shows the countdown for when it will change.

NOTE: If it is nearing the end of its timer, just wait for a new code to generate before typing it in on your computer. This will avoid failures between when the number changes and when you actually type it in.

  • Type in the code, then click on the Verify button.

After clicking the Verify button, you will be presented with an Excellent! Screen.

  • Click on the Continue button

The next screen will ask if you want to create Printable Backup Codes.

If you haven’t done so already, this is highly recommended.

  • Click on Create New Codes if you wish to do so now.

    • This document will not go in depth on backup codes

    • To learn more about Printable Backup Codes, CLICK HERE.

  • Click on Skip If you wish to create Printable Backup Codes later.

That’s It!

Once this process is completed, the next screen will tell you so.

  • Click on the See My Profile button

Once you are back on your profile screen, you will notice that the Smartphone App box is populated with information on creation date and when it was last used.

This shows that it was successfully added to your profile.

Congratulations! You have successfully added Google Authenticator as a secondary authentication method for your Wycliffe Identity Profile account!

Any time you are required to enter in an authentication method for your Wycliffe IDP account, you will be able to use either your security key or Google Authenticator.
