Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this document is to explain how to install and configure AdBlockPlus.org’s adblocker utility. AdBlock Plus is a browser based plugin that will block most ads and other undesirable aspects of web browsing, such as auto-play video ads and even YouTube ads.

AdBlockers will also help prevent malicious fake ads, popups and clickables from being seen on your screen while browsing the internet. Because it blocks them from your view, you won’t be able to click on them, thus keeping you and your computer safer from those intending to do harm.

Wycliffe USA installs this on all of our computers issued to staff. We also all use it personally and encourage staff to use it on their personal devices as well.

While Wycliffe USA endorses this utility, we are not associated with AdBlockPlus.org in any way.

This document will walk you through adding AdBlockPlus to the Google Chrome browser. It is compatible with nearly all major browsers, but this document will only focus on Google Chrome, as this is the browser that Wycliffe supports.

Before Installing

Note that there are many ad blocking utilities out there. A couple of the top choices are AdBlock Plus and uBlock Origin. For most people, AdBlock Plus is one of the best options. Either of those options are good choices though.

Keep in mind too that there are many other ad blocking utilities out there that have a similar name or will make similar claims, and while many are safe to use, many are not. Instead, they are often malware that will actually monitor your web browsing habits and send your information to unknown sources.

That said, this is another reason we prefer AdBlock Plus. We know it’s safe to use and works very well.

If you see the red ABP icon on the top of your browser, then know that this is already installed on your browser. If not, then proceed with the following instructions.

Install AdBlock Plus

If you use multiple web browsers on your computer, follow these steps to install Adblock Plus on each one. Each time you install this, it will only install it for the web browser that you are using at that time.

In your preferred web browser, CLICK HERE to navigate to AdBlockPlus.org
- https://adblockplus.org/

On the AdblockPlus home page, look for the big green button halfway down the left side of the screen.

It will say “GET ADBLOCK PLUS FOR xxxxx”, with xxxxx being the browser that you are currently using.

Click on the green Get Adblock Plus button.

There is a version for nearly every major browser in use.

After clicking on the green button, you will be taken to the Chrome Web Store

Click on the Add to Chrome button

A popup for Chrome will appear, asking if you want to Add “Adblock Plus - free ad blocker”?

Click the Add Extension button

It will now install the Adblock Plus plugin

Once completed, you will be redirected to a donation page for AdBlock Plus.

AdBlockPlus.org is a non-profit organization that creates this utility for all to use freely.

If you feel like donating personally, know that this utility helps millions of people around the world.

Otherwise, just close the window and continue to the configuration steps.

You may have noticed that after installing AdBlock Plus, that nothing looks changed. This is because by default, Chrome hides all newly installed plugins. You will need to Pin AdBlock Plus to your browser bar.

Click on the puzzle icon on Chrome’s tool bar

The Extensions menu will drop down.

Click on the little push pin icon to turn it from sideways-gray to upright-blue

You will then see the ABP logo appear next to the puzzle icon on the toolbar.

Configure AdBlock Plus

Now that AdBlock Plus is installed, we will need to configure it for optimal settings to enable it to block the most ads and other undesirable items from your web browser.
